A large-scale restoration and renovation project is now underway at the William H. Gray III 30th Street Station in Philadelphia.

The project will enhance the station’s functionality and improve the customer experience for Amtrak, SEPTA and NJ TRANSIT customers. The project will also improve the Market Street Plaza, expand retail offerings, and provide other benefits to the local community.

Major elements of the station renovation include modernizing and expanding station retail; consolidating station operations; upgrading The Porch landscaping and community amenities; modernizing Amtrak corporate offices; and enhancing building infrastructure to achieve and maintain a ‘state of good repair.’

Amtrak has contracted with the Plenary Infrastructure Philadelphia consortium to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the station improvements for the next 50 years.

Design features

The customer experience of the station will be enhanced by restoring the station's interior to a state of good repair and introducing a number of design improvements, including:

  • A new Market Street Plaza that invites the community into the station and provides for community events, entertainment and seasonal markets;
  • A redeveloped main concourse that improves circulation accommodating peak flow over all four seasons;
  • A 20% increase in concession space, with new offerings to meet growing neighborhood demand and the evolving needs of travelers;
  • An upgraded and expanded Metropolitan Lounge;
  • Relocated and enhanced customer service functions that improve Amtrak’s ability to deliver excellent customer service as well as operating efficiency;
  • Efficiently consolidated back-of-house spaces that better support the new customer service functions and improve service;
  • Renovated Corporate Offices that provide for a modern and efficient workplace for Amtrak’s headquarters.

Innovations

The project includes the management of operations and maintenance, and concession management of the existing facility starting at Financial Close and through the construction period to maintain the passenger experience for Amtrak.

Local Economic Benefits

The project will add an estimated 3,000 direct/indirect jobs to the local community.
