Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital

The Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will provide the necessary expansion and realignment of services that will enable Mackenzie Health to meet the care needs of the southwest York region.

In particular, it will address the unprecedented rate of growth in the Vaughan community and will accommodate the demand for health care services, evolving clinical practice and new technology and equipment.

Located on a greenfield site on Major Mackenzie Drive between Jane Street and Highway 400, the new facility will provide Southwest York Region with a comprehensive range of expanded and enhanced acute care services.

The new 1.2 million-square-foot health care centre, which also features over 1800 above grade parking spaces, is scheduled for occupancy in early 2021.

Design features

The new facility consists of 367 beds and is the first hospital in Canada to feature fully integrated “smart” technology. This technology features systems and medical devices that can speak directly to one another to maximize information exchange.

The design consists of an 11-storey tower with a 5-storey podium. In addition, there is a lower level for a total of approximately 1.2 million square feet (including the Central Utility Plant and Mechanical & Electrical floor), a portion of which will be built as shelled space to accommodate capacity for flexibility and future growth.

The new Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital will be LEED® Canada-NC 2009 Silver certified and includes the following features:

  • A state-of-the-art emergency department
  • Modern surgical services and operating rooms
  • Advanced diagnostic imaging
  • Specialized ambulatory clinics and intensive care beds
  • Medicine, Birthing (Obstetrics), Pediatrics, Mental Health and the York Region District Stroke Centre
  • Approximately 90 per cent single occupancy acute-care patient rooms for infection prevention and control.

Innovations

Unique to this project was the inclusion of a separately procured contract for managed ICAT services infrastructure. Plenary Health entered into an additional agreement with the Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital selected provider, Compugen Inc., for the delivery of certain IT scope.

This unique delivery approach ensures increased flexibility for Mackenzie Health in serving their short and long term IT needs.

Local economic impact

The project will provide substantial economic support to the local community through job creation. Approximately 600 workers were on site at the peak of construction.
