New high-capacity trains for Melbourne Airport Rail

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - The Victorian Government has funded an additional five High Capacity Metro Trains in the 2022/23 Victorian Budget to provide the fleet needed for the Melbourne Airport Rail project.

The five new trains add to the 65 trains already being delivered as part of the $2.3 billion High Capacity Metro Trains project.

Production, testing and commissioning is in full swing, with 20 of the bigger, better and more accessible trains are now in service on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines.

The trains will run through to Sunbury following the opening of the Metro Tunnel.

Melbourne Airport Rail will connect Melbourne Airport to Victoria’s metropolitan and regional rail networks, giving passengers at 30 stations direct rail access to the airport and will support up to 8,000 jobs during construction.

The HCMT project is also working to save plastics from landfill.

In an Australian-first initiative, soft plastic waste from the project is being converted into road surfacing products and is used in road projects across Victoria, including the Western Roads Upgrade, and M80 Ring Road and Monash Freeway upgrades.

Plenary is an investor, and project sponsor, financial adviser, financial arranger and asset manager for the HCMT project, part of the Evolution Rail consortium contracted to deliver and maintain the trains and two maintenance facilities for 35 years.
