Regional Victorian business to build bogies for High Capacity Metro Trains

Evolution Rail consortium member CRRC has awarded Victorian regional company Hofmann Engineering the contract to manufacture and supply more than 900 bogie frames for the High Capacity Metro Trains project.

After a competitive evaluation process, which included technical, commercial and local content considerations the bogie frames will be built using 87 per cent Victorian local content and will create 30 jobs for Hoffmann.

Evolution Rail CEO Phillip Walker said Evolution Rail is proud to be partnering with the Victorian Government on the HCMT project to build the new state-of-the-art fleet that will be among the best in the world.

“The HCMT project is creating new opportunities for local businesses like Hofmann Engineering, creating jobs for the future and supporting the growth of a sustainable and globally competitive rail manufacturing industry,” Mr Walker said.

The HCMT fleet will be built with 60 per cent local content.

Mr Walker said Evolution Rail is working with project partners and industry to support workforce development, local investment and local industry growth in Victoria that will help revitalise the rail manufacturing industry.

This includes a significant knowledge and technology transfer initiative that will drive innovation and support Victorian businesses to expand their operations locally and abroad.

Evolution Rail is also working with Melbourne-based contractor Civilex, contracted to deliver bulk earthworks, internal roads, and drainage at the Pakenham East Depot and Train Maintenance Facility that is being built to stable 30 of the trains.

Heidelberg-based contractor Andrew Engineering will supply, install and commission the wheel lathe equipment for the depot.

Plenary is the project sponsor, financial advisor, financial arranger, asset manager and investor for the project, and is part of the Evolution Rail consortium, also comprising Downer and CRRC, contracted to deliver and maintain the trains over the next 35 years.
