Melbourne Market wins Australian sustainability award
Published 12 August 2016MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – Melbourne Market has won another sustainability award, this time taking the honours at the 2016 Australian Business Awards.
The Australian Business Awards recognises organisations across all industries and sectors that demonstrate leadership and commitment to sustainable business practices.
This is Melbourne Market’s second sustainability-focused award this year after being awarded a World Union of Wholesale Markets award for waste management in May.
Plenary Group Chief Operating Officer Glenn Hay said he was proud to see Melbourne Market receive national recognition.
“Plenary has worked with the Melbourne Market Authority to reduce the environmental impact the market has on water, energy, waste and biodiversity,” Mr Hay said.
“These elements were at the forefront during the design process and continue to be important in the daily operations of the market.”
Melbourne Market Authority Chairman Stephen McArthur said the award affirms the MMA’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
“One of our greatest achievements at the new Melbourne Market facility is the ability to incorporate world-class technology to reduce our impact on the environment,” Mr McArthur said.
“This award win recognises the intelligent design of a site that has been custom-made to meet the needs of a growing industry.”
Plenary was appointed by the Melbourne Market Authority in 2013 to facilitate the transition to a new site in Epping and now works as the asset and facilities management partner.
In partnership with IKON Waste Management, Plenary introduced innovative waste management infrastructure to help the market work towards achieving a recycling target of 95 per cent.
More than 4,000 businesses use the wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower market to buy and sell fresh produce for distribution across Australia.
