VCCC Project primary façade complete

MELBOURNE, VICTORIA – The $1 billion Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) Project reached another significant milestone last week, with the final crane being removed from site signalling the substantial completion of the south side facility’s façade.

Plenary Health’s recently appointed General Manager, David Keenan, said that with the building’s primary façade now watertight, the installation of the façade’s highly articulate, white spiral detail had commenced and would continue over the next few months.

“Grocon PCL’s team of expert designers, engineers and contractors has developed and delivered for the VCCC Project’s south side building a highly complex façade system made up of multiple materials,” he said.

Those materials include curtain wall glazing, pre-cast concrete panels, strip windows, louvers, aluminum paneling, Fibre Reinforced Plastic panels, decorative screens, glazed brick and sunshades.

“What’s really pleasing is that the visual form we see today is exactly as the project’s design team intended – there is no mistaking it, once complete, the VCCC will leave a striking imprint on Melbourne’s built form”, said Mr Keenan.

“The façade’s final detailing will create beautifully crafted colonnades at street level creating a pedestrian realm.”

At the peak of construction four tower cranes were installed on site.

A fifth, smaller tower crane was added to the facility’s roof in order to bring forward the removal of the four tower cranes which penetrated the facility’s structure.

This approach facilitated the completion of areas affected by the crane remediation works earlier than initially proposed and consequently bring forward the fit out program.

With the façade nearing completion, interior fit out of the VCCC Project’s south side facility continues at pace with many areas approaching completion ready for testing and commissioning.

The VCCC Project’s south side facility is set to open in 2016.
