Public goes behind the scenes at Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre

MELBOURNE, VICTORIA – More than 300 members of the public were given a sneak peek at Plenary Health’s $1 billion Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC), currently under construction in Parkville.

The VCCC was a highlight building in this year’s Open House Melbourne program, with pre-booked hard hat tours held throughout the day on Sunday 26 July 2015.

Kicking off the day was Victorian Health Minister, Jill Hennessy, who was joined by media and senior representatives from the project’s building partner organisations on a tour of this landmark Victorian facility. Minister Hennessy also took the opportunity to officially unveil the VCCC’s stunning atrium. 

Representatives from Plenary Health’s VCCC consortium partners, Grocon PCL, Honeywell and the project’s design joint venture (STHDI with MCR) – together with experts from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the University of Melbourne – provided the public with detailed insight into the facility’s design, construction and operation as they made their way around the building.

Plenary Group Chief Operating Officer, Glenn Hay, was delighted to be able to open up the VCCC to public ahead of its open in mid-2016.

“We are extremely pleased to hear the incredibly positive feedback from those people lucky enough to secure a spot on a tour yesterday,” Mr Hay said.

“We’ve made great progress, but there’s still a lot of work to do between now and when the VCCC opens. Our builder Grocon PCL is very focused on completing construction works, including interior fit out, in order to commence the building partners’ complex transition into their new home.”

When it opens in mid-2016 the VCCC will become the new home for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and incorporate additional capacity for Melbourne Health and the University of Melbourne – providing clinical, research and educational facilities for all building partners.

The Victorian Government, through the Department of Health & Human Services, has contracted Plenary Health to design, build, finance and maintain the VCCC under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) delivery model.
