NRT reveals life-size model for Sydney Metro Northwest

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – A 13-tonne, life-size train model has been unveiled in Sydney, giving customers a first-hand look at the future of fully-automated metro travel as part of the Sydney Metro Northwest project. 

NSW Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance unveiled the new-look train carriage earlier this month. 

The model will be tested by different customer groups, providing feedback on the internal design features before going into production in 2016. 

Plenary Managing Director Paul Oppenheim said it is exciting to see this project coming to life. 

“Sydney Metro Northwest will transform the public transport system in Australia and this life-size train model is the first sign of these exciting changes,” Paul said. 

“The new trains have been designed to allow customers to have a clear view from one end of the train to the other and will have two multi-purpose areas for prams, luggage and bicycles.  There will also be designated wheelchair spaces and priority seating throughout the train for travellers with limited mobility.” 

Plenary Group, the capital arranger and financial sponsor of the project, was a part of the Northwest Rapid Transit (NRT) consortium that achieved financial close on the A$3.7 billion project in September 2014, with construction currently underway. 

The Sydney Metro Northwest project is on schedule to start operations in the first half of 2019 with 15 trains operating per hour during peak periods on this fully automated, turn-up-and-go metro railway network. 

The 36km network will connect Chatswood on the North Shore to the city’s North Western Suburbs and will deliver a new level of customer service and safety to Sydney’s rail network.
