Atrium Skylight for Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre
Published 26 February 2015MELBOURNE, VICTORIA – The Plenary Health Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) Project team has recently completed the installation of the Facility’s atrium skylight roof.
The 546 square metre glazed skylight is made up of 158 panels with spans up to 30 metres.
Builder Grocon PCL meticulously installed the panels utilising one of the site’s tower cranes.
Each toughened glazed panel weighs around 120kg and the skylight has been designed and engineered so that it can be walked on for cleaning and maintenance purposes.
The atrium provides visual connectivity and way finding for visitors, patients and staff, allowing them to instantly orientate themselves in the facility. It also provides natural light in to the depths of the building which contributes to the wellbeing of patients and provides vistas to the outside from key locations allowing patients the benefit of simple visual cues such as the time of day and what the weather’s like.
With the skylight work completed, the bird cage scaffolding that has filled the Facility’s 13-level atrium void will be removed over the coming months with final finishes being applied progressively as the scaffold is removed.
