Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre Project gets first bridge link

MELBOURNE, VICTORIA - Plenary Health is pleased to mark another significant construction milestone for the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) Project; the installation of the first of two bridge links across Grattan Street which links the new $1 billion facility with the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Plenary’s Head of Origination, Paul Crowe, together with a number of other key project representatives joined the Victorian Minister for Health David Davis in Parkville yesterday to inspect the new bridge.

Mr Crowe said the bridges symbolise the concept of collaboration among building partners Peter Mac, Royal Melbourne Hospital and The University of Melbourne.

“This is a significant milestone for the project and all involved,” Mr Crowe said. “These bridge links speak to the very heart of the VCCC Project; fostering collaboration between the best in cancer care, research and education.”

Two large mobile cranes were used to lift the 110 tonne bridge into place. The large structure creates a 47 metre long walkway across Grattan Street and connects ambulatory care and pathology areas on Level 2 of the new facility on the

South side with ambulatory care and pathology areas on Level 2 of the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Shortly façade cladding and finishes will be applied to the Level 2 Bridge to complete the process.

Fabrication of the double-storey Level 6/7 bridge has commenced off site and will be lifted into place later this year.
