Plenary Health celebrates VCCC Topping Out
Published 14 October 2014MELBOURNE, VICTORIA - Plenary Health’s $1 billion Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) Project in Parkville has reached a significant milestone, with the facility’s structure reaching its highest point.
Plenary Health hosted Victorian Premier, Dr Denis Napthine, and Minister for Health, David Davis, on site at an event to mark the facility’s ‘topping out’.
Now 18 months into construction the new 13-storey 120,000sqm cancer facility’s towering structure sits 72 metres above street level in Parkville.
Plenary Group Principal, John O’Rourke, congratulated the Plenary Health project team on reaching this significant milestone, making special mention of the consortium’s construction joint venture Grocon PCL.
“It takes many hands to deliver a project of this size and complexity and there are many others to acknowledge including the workers on site, our dedicated design and services consultants, our financiers, and our client and building partner colleagues.”
Following the event’s official proceedings the Premier and other VIPs each signed a 10-metre long sky light atrium beam that was lifted into place by one of the site’s tower crane.
“Construction of the world class $1 billion VCCC Project is on budget and on track to be operational in 2016,” Dr Napthine said.
“The lifting of the final beam signifies the completion of the external structure of the VCCC Project’s south side, with the focus of construction now moving to the façade and internal fit out.”
Plenary Health is delivering the VCCC Project on behalf of the Victorian State Government.
The VCCC Project will provide a brand new home for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and new cancer research and clinical services for Melbourne Health (including the Royal Melbourne Hospital), new cancer research facilities for The University of Melbourne and new education facilities for all building partners.
