LARRAKEYAH, NORTHERN TERRITORY - Plenary Living’s Single LEAP 2 project construction partner Sitzler has received two awards from the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) for its defence accommodation facility at HMAS Coonawarra, including Northern Territory (NT) Project of the Year.

The facility, comprising 232 single living units and adjoining indoor and outdoor recreational areas for Australian navy personnel, also won the AIPM NT Chapter’s Construction/Engineering Category for projects less than $100 million.

Completed in June, the Larrakeyah facility is one of 17 sites being delivered across 14 bases as part of Plenary Living’s $900 million Single LEAP 2 Public Private Partnership project for the Department of Defence.

Project Manager and Sponsor, Plenary Group, has partnered with a consortium of local construction firms and Compass Group Pty Ltd to finance, design, construct, operate and maintain a total of 3,015 accommodation units for 33 years.

Sitzler’s delivery of the Larrakeyah facility also required the NT-based construction firm to undertake a significant and complex heritage restoration of three buildings originally constructed in the 1930s that, significantly, survived both the bombing of Darwin in 1942 and Cyclone Tracy in 1974.

Plenary Group Principal John O’Rourke said he was pleased that Sitzler had received independent recognition for their work on what is an important facility for the Australian service men and women living on base and away from home.

“Sitzler is indeed deserving of this industry recognition with the project completed to an incredibly high standard 12 weeks ahead of program – even with the added complexity of a delicate heritage restoration,” said Mr O’Rourke.

In addition to the Larrakeyah facility, NT-based Sitzler has already delivered 334 units at Robertson Barracks, with a further 352 expected to be completed in February 2014.

As NT Project of the Year the Single LEAP 2 facility at Larrakeyah will now advance to the AIPM’s Project Management Achievement Awards national event in Perth in October.
