Master Builders recognition for Larrakeyah defence accommodation facility

LARRAKEYAH, NORTHERN TERRITORY - Plenary Living’s Single LEAP 2 project construction partner Sitzler has received further industry recognition for its defence accommodation facility at HMAS Coonawarra, picking up two awards from the Master Builders Association (MBA) in the Northern Territory (NT). 

Sitzler was victorious in two categories at the recent MBA NT Excellence in Construction and Building Awards; Alterations/Renovations Over $500,000 and the Green Building – Commercial.

The MBA awards follow Sitzler’s recent success at the Australian Institute of Project Management Achievement Awards, where the NT-based construction firm picked up two awards; Northern Territory (NT) Project of the Year and Construction/Engineering Category for projects less than $100 million.

Comprising a total 232 single living, self-contained units and communal indoor and outdoor recreational facilities, the HMAS Coonawarra Single LEAP 2 accommodation facility was completed in June this year.

Central to the project was the complex heritage restoration of three buildings originally constructed in the 1930s. Having survived significant events including the Bombing of Darwin and Cyclone Tracy in 1974 the buildings were carefully restored to form part of the site’s accommodation offering.

Plenary Group Principal John O’Rourke said he was delighted Sitzler had received further industry recognition for their work at Larrakeyah.

“To receive four industry awards for a single project says a lot about Sitzler’s dedication, professionalism and project delivery and construction capabilities,” Mr O’Rourke said. “It’s only fitting that the team at Sitzler be rewarded for their work at Larrakeyah delivered to an excellent standard an impressive three months ahead of schedule.”

The Larrakeyah facility is one of 17 sites being delivered across 14 bases as part of Plenary Living’s $900 million Single LEAP 2 Public Private Partnership project (PPP) for the Department of Defence.

Project Manager and Sponsor, Plenary Group, has partnered with a consortium of local construction firms and Compass Group Pty Ltd to finance, design, construct, operate and maintain a total of 3,015 accommodation units for 33 years.

In addition to the 232 units at Larrakeyah Sitzler has completed 334 units at Robertson Barracks, with a further 352 expected to be completed in February 2014 as part of the Single LEAP 2 PPP.
